Big Cypress Bend Boardwalk was another short, fun scenic hike that we took during our recent tour of South Florida. Sandwiched in between our hike in Everglades National Park and our hike at Florida Panther National Wildlife Reserve, Big Cypress Bend was the most touristy of the three. The boardwalk had many people on it belying the ability of anyone — from avid hikers to people with disabilities — to be able to take advantage of the amazing surroundings. And some of the sights were amazing! Once again, the first image we had not less than five minutes into the area was that of an alligator. Only this time, there were many baby gators hanging out near their mother. Cue visitors gaping and angling for that perfect photograph (including us, we will admit!).
The boardwalk is located within the Fakahatchee Strand State Preserve and is about 3200 feet long. This out-and-back will take you to an observation area which overlooks a gator hole. There are benches spread throughout for people to have a seat and take a look at the surrounding flora. Snakes, warblers, woodpeckers, gators — even a bald eagle's nest! Big Cypress Bend has quite a lot to see, so make sure you bring your birding glasses or binoculars!
Walking along the boardwalk, every time you blink there's another image flashing across your eyes of something magnificent. From the old, bald cypress trees to the strangler fig, you should definitely make sure that your camera's batteries are fully charged.
And, while there is no fee to enter the boardwalk, there is a box located toward the start of the path for donations. Three dollars is a small price to pay for such a wonderful afternoon.
